Where do you get your protein?
Our National Obsession with Protein
It’s a little ridiculous how obsessed we are with protein, and yet the diseases Americans are suffering and dying from are not diseases of deficiency: heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Most likely, we don’t know of any friends with protein deficiency, we see it in countries where the people are starving. They’re not getting protein because they’re not getting food. We don’t have any protein deficiency hospital wards or specialists, but we all know people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease. The problem isn’t that vegans aren’t getting enough protein; the problem is that most people are taking in way too much animal protein, saturated fat, and dietary cholesterol.
The truth is that amino acids (the building blocks of protein) are present in nearly every food. As long as you consume a variety of leafy greens, vegetables, seaweed, nuts, seeds, legumes/beans, whole grains, and maybe a bit of soy, and meet your calorie needs daily, you'll be fine on the protein.Too much protein, on the other hand (from a heavy meat diet), is bad for the digestive system and damages the kidneys and liver.

Fast Food Nation
Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal - the book:
From Publishers Weekly
Schlosser's incisive history of the development of American fast food indicts the industry for some shocking crimes against humanity, including systematically destroying the American diet and landscape, and undermining our values and our economy. The first part of the book details the postwar ascendance of fast food from Southern California, assessing the impact on people in the West in general. The second half looks at the product itself: where it is manufactured (in a handful of enormous factories), what goes into it (chemicals, feces) and who is responsible (monopolistic corporate executives). In harrowing detail, the book explains the process of beef slaughter and confirms almost every urban myth about what in fact "lurks between those sesame seed buns." Given the estimate that the typical American eats three hamburgers and four orders of french fries each week, and one in eight will work for McDonald's in the course of their lives, few are exempt from the insidious impact of fast food. Throughout, Schlosser fires these and a dozen other hair-raising statistical bullets into the heart of the matter. While cataloguing assorted evils with the tenacity and sharp eye of the best investigative journalist, he uncovers a cynical, dismissive attitude to food safety in the fast food industry and widespread circumvention of the government's efforts at regulation enacted after Upton Sinclair's similarly scathing novel exposed the meat-packing industry 100 years ago. By systematically dismantling the industry's various aspects, Schlosser establishes a seminal argument for true wrongs at the core of modern America. (Jan.) Forecast: This book will find a healthy, young audience; it's notable that the Rolling Stone article on which this book was based generated more reader mail than any other piece the magazine ran in the 1990s.
Fast Food Nation (2006) - the movie: a fictionalized feature film based on Eric Schlosser's bestselling nonfiction expose.
Peter Travers of Rolling Stone awarded the film three out of four stars and added, "Eric Schlosser's nonfiction 2001 best seller, Fast Food Nation, started life at this magazine, but the bucking maverick of a movie he has scripted with director Richard Linklater (A Scanner Darkly) is cut from a different side of beef. It's less an expose of junk-food culture than a human drama, sprinkled with sly, provoking wit, about how that culture defines how we live ...
If the movie stayed on topic, we'd have a muckraking probe with roots back to Upton Sinclair's seminal 1906 book The Jungle and extending to Morgan Spurlock's 2004 doc Super Size Me. But Schlosser and Linklater are hunting bigger game. The shit in the burger is symptomatic of a larger contamination.
The film is brimming with grand ambitions but trips on many of them as some characters aren't given enough screen time to register and others vanish just when you want to learn more about them."
Todd McCarthy of Variety wrote, "Richard Linklater's rough-hewn tapestry of assorted lives that feed off of and into the American meat industry is both rangy and mangy; it remains appealing for its subversive motives and revelations even as one wishes its knife would have been sharper ... In the end, viewers waiting for an emotional and/or dramatic payoff will be disappointed. As a call-to-arms, it's highly sympathetic but surprisingly mild-mannered."

Trailer | Forks Over Knives - The Official Movie Website
From the official website:
What has happened to us? Despite the most advanced medical technology in the world, we are sicker than ever by nearly every measure. Two out of every three of us are overweight. Cases of diabetes are exploding, especially amongst our younger population. About half of us are taking at least one prescription drug. Major medical operations have become routine, helping to drive health care costs to astronomical levels. Heart disease, cancer and stroke are the country’s three leading causes of death, even though billions are spent each year to “battle” these very conditions. Millions suffer from a host of other degenerative diseases.
Could it be there’s a single solution to all of these problems? A solution so comprehensive but so utterly straightforward, that it’s mind-boggling that more of us haven’t taken it seriously?
FORKS OVER KNIVES examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the so-called “diseases of affluence” that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed, by rejecting our present menu of animal-based and processed foods. The major storyline in the film traces the personal journeys of a pair of pioneering yet under-appreciated researchers, Dr. T. Colin Campbell and Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn.

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that's been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. Food, Inc. reveals surprising — and often shocking truths — about what we eat, how it's produced, who we have become as a nation and where we are going from here.

My health odyssey (part 2)
After seeing the piece about Rip Esselstyn and The Engine 2 Diet on TV that fateful Sunday morning it was off to the internet and particularly Amazon.com to search for answers.

- Eat to Live: The Revolutionary Formula for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss

My health odyssey (part 1)
This was what changed my life (health) for the better.
Like most people, I suppose, I had always thought of myself as a fairly healthy person. Oh, I could tone up a bit, maybe drop about 20 lbs. Then it seemed that once I hit the big five-oh, I started breaking down. I was starting to feel old, tired, with chronic aches and pains. Was this normal aging? Was this the way it was going to be for the rest of my life? Hopefully another 30+ years...
Then things took a turn for the worse. I was having circulation problems in my right leg. I could barely walk 50 yards without serious discomfort, and that distance was shortening. Ok, this was getting serious and I was beginning to get worried- my mind was racing to remember those damned drug commercials (I hate those!) about PAD. I finally, stubbornly, went to my doctor. Diagnosis- atherosclerosis, prescription- surgery, stent. Done.
That was in March of 2006. Jump forward almost 3 years- the problem returns. Worse. This time it has extended to the left leg, too. Surgery, two stents. Done. Follow up prescriptions- statins, Plavix. Was this the way it was going to be for the rest of my life? Hopefully another 30+ years...
Then, one Sunday morning I saw this on television...
After seeing this story I pondered my own declining health and came to the conclusion that this might just be the real answer.
